Spring is here! We survived the first committee deadline, and all bills that have passed committee now move onto the floor. Last week, we saw several bills ranging from abortion bans and classroom censorship to criminal legal setbacks and anti-2SLGBTQ+ policies make its way through the legislature.
Policy Corner:
Keeping an Eye on:
All bills below are headed to the floor.
HB 3903 by Rep. Pfeiffer narrowly passed committee by a vote of 6-5. This bill will prevent incarcerated folks sentenced to death and life without the possibility of parole from seeking commutation. It would prohibit the Pardon and Parole Board from hearing cases based on claims of innocence.
HB 4327 by Rep. Stearman passed committee by a vote of 6-2. This bill is a Texas style abortion ban that would allow anybody to sue a pregnant person for obtaining an abortion.
HB 4245 by Rep. Hasenbeck passed committee by a vote of 6-2. This bill was the same trans sports ban we saw last year with SB 2. It was added to the agenda last minute and would prevent transgender students from participating in sports that align with their gender identity.
SB 1142 by Sen. Standridge passed committee by 8-4 with the chair of the Senate Education Committee, Sen. Pugh, voting against it. This bill would prohibit public schools from maintaining books involving sexuality and impose a 10k fine for each day the book remains in the library after a request to remove it.
HB 3238 by Rep. Gann narrowly passed committee by 6-5. This bill would shorten the eviction time from twelve days to six days and remove the court’s discretion to make a ruling that is fair under the circumstances.
Excited About:
HB 4154 by Rep. Goodwin increases the income limits for the Tulsa Reconciliation Scholarship Trust to 120k and requires regents to consider whether applicants are descendants of Tulsa Race Massacre.
